Mail.rochester.edu Access

Due to recent and ongoing Internet threats experienced by the University community, we are limiting the number of users having access to the command line (shell) on mail.rochester.edu. The change will be effective immediately.

Over the past few years, the number of users who access the system via SSH has decreased dramatically, and it no longer makes sense to provide this access by default. Because access to the command line gives users a direct path to the system where they can execute commands, limiting access will increase the security of the mail server for all of our users.

What if I use the command line to access a shared account?

We are leaving the shared accounts that are really shared accounts (don't have set passwords of their own), as they are. If you need to access your shared accounts via a shell, you can apply for shell access for your personal account.

If the shared account *does* have a password and can be accessed directly, then the owner of the shared account will need to submit a shell access form for that shared account.
