Introduction: Floppy disks are too small for most of today's modern file types. Zip disks are a step up, but suffer from the same problem that floppy disks suffer from: files can become unstable on them and weeks of work can be lost. What is a better solution to disks? Network file storage! And now, the University of Rochester provides 100MB of space for you to store your files, right on your mail.rochester.edu account. This document describes how to access this service using an SSL-enabled web browser, from any operating system (such as Windows, Unix or MacOS).

NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING THE COMBINATION OF WINDOWS XP AND INTERNET EXPLORER PLEASE USE THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE MAIL.ROCHESTER.EDU PAGE UNDER FILE MANAGEMENT TOOLS ENTITLED WEBRFM FOR WINDOWS XP

Step 1: Open an SSL-enabled web browser. Most modern browsers (Netscape, Mozilla, Internet Explorer) are SSL-enabled.

Step 2: In the address bar of your web browser, type in https://mail.rochester.edu/sslcgi-bin/file/access

Step 3: You should see a login window pop up. It will look something like the one pictured below. Enter your mail.rochester.edu login and password.

Note: Do not check the Remember Password box if you are on a public workstation!

Step 4: In your web browser main window, you should now see a form that looks like the picture below. This is the file manager for your mail account. Listed are all the files currently in your mail account.

Note: Some of these are created and required by the system to make your mail account work properly, so don't delete anything unless you know what it is.

Downloading Files: To download any of the files that are listed, just click on the file you want so that it is highlighted, and then click on the Open/Get button. The web browser should then ask you where you want to save your file. Note: If you try this on one of the files that starts with a slash (/), you will actually open a new "folder", as opposed to downloading a file.

Deleting Files: To delete any of the files that are listed, just click on the file you want to delete so that it is highlighted, and then click on the Delete button. The web browser will ask you if you are sure you want to delete the file. If you are sure, tell it yes.

Uploading Files: To upload a file from your computer to the server, click the Upload button. You will get an additional box on your screen that looks like the one below. Click on the Browse button and choose the file you wish to upload. Then click the Upload button. The file should now appear in the listing in the file manager.
