WebRFM is extremely useful for managing the content of special files in your account, like the following:
.forward .vacation.msg
These files are important system files that control aspects of your email account on the mail server. The '.' at the beginning of the name means that they are hidden files with special significance. They also take extra steps to view. So, the first thing you'll need to tell WebRFM is that you want to display these hidden files.
Log in to WebRFM at https://mail.rochester.edu/sslcgi-bin/file/access.
Click on the 'Options' button.
Scroll down to the "File hiding" option and uncheck it.
Click the 'Okay' button.
Now, you can see your hidden files that begin with '.' and work with them as necessary. Note: You may have to scroll down in the WebRFM box to view files as directories are listed first.
If the file you want to edit exists, select the file and click 'Edit'.
For a ".forward" file, you want the file to contain only the email address to which you want your email forwarded, e.g. myself@somewhere.com.
For a ".vacation.msg" file, the content should be something like the following:
------------------------------------------------------------------------- From : "Insert Username/Name here" (via the vacation program) Subject: away from my mail - on vacation Hello, I will be away from January 13th through January 23rd of 2006. I will answer your email when I return. Sincerely, "Insert Name Here" --------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you have completed your editing, click 'Save+Exit'.
If your file doesn't exist, click the 'New' button.
Then, make sure to select the 'File' option and not the 'Directory' option.
Put the name of your new file in the box (.forward or .vacation.msg -- don't forget to include the leading '.' with no spaces!) and click 'Create'.
Now you can edit your new file using the steps above.
For your vacation message to be sent out, your email must be forwarded to the vacation program.
Select your .forward file in the WebRFM window and click 'Edit'. If the file does not exist, you will need to create it with the procedure above.
To properly execute the vacation program, your .forward file will need to have this exact syntax along with your individual username. If you feel you need help with this, please contact the ITS Center at x52000.
"|/usr/bin/vacation username"
Double-quotes and the '|' (pipe) symbol are important parts of the syntax and must be included!
If you have an alternate email address like username@rochester.edu, you can include it for vacation messages with this syntax:
"|/usr/bin/vacation -a first.last username"
When you are finished editing your file, click the 'Save+Exit' button.
